Volunteering – where can I volunteer near me?
We were delighted to support The Big Help Out at the beginning of May, a national campaign designed to inspire a new generation of volunteers to lend a hand in King Charles III’s Coronation year.
The campaign was a great success with our friends at St. Peter’s Community Hall & Gardens welcoming 51 volunteers willing to ‘lend a hand’ on 8th May, part of the 6 million people who signed up across the country.
If you contributed yourself you’ll no doubt have got the ‘Volunteering bug’ as the benefits to physical and mental health, confidence and self-esteem have been proved year on year in our Impact Reports. This week is Volunteers Week, so what better time to look to continue your volunteering journey and we can support you to find your perfect role.
Volunteer opportunities
We work with a range of local charities and organisations to support their recruitment and retention of volunteers. Many of the voluntary roles offered are specific to the local area but there are opportunities to support remotely or for particular events in their calendars. We’ve listed a few examples below as to how you can get involved no matter how much time you have to offer.
Extending a hobby
If you love gardening there are volunteering roles aplenty all over the country for you to get involved. Here are just a few:
Nightingale Garden, near to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, is a biodiverse community garden for everyone to enjoy.
Let’s Grow Preston, promotes physical and mental wellbeing through volunteering in horticulture through their two community gardens that grow many varieties of plants from ornamental to edible.
Global Gardens Project, Cardiff offer community based learning about organic food growing and seasonal and nourishing cooking via their twice-weekly volunteer garden sessions.
Helping remotely
Volunteering doesn’t have to be a hands on experience. We have a range of opportunities that you can do from home which may involve offering your financial and legal expertise or a a simple, informal chat with a local resident.
Friends For You, in Chorley, offers a befriending service that seeks to reduce loneliness throughout the more senior residents of Chorley and the surrounding area.
Get The Chance is a social enterprise based in South Wales, working to create opportunities for a diverse range of people to experience and respond to sport, arts, culture and live events. They support volunteers with free tickets to view a range of cultural events across the country in exchange for a review for their online magazine.
One off events
If you can’t commit to supporting every week our charities offer a range of volunteering opportunities where you can sign up to specific events.
Run 4 Wales, or the Extra Milers, support mass participation running events throughout Wales. As a volunteer you can support as a Course Marshall, manning a water station or as part of their bag drop team. A chance to be involved in a great event, but you’re only committing to one day.
Earning Tempo Time Credits
Whether you’re volunteering daily or once a month all our volunteers earn Tempo Time Credits as part of our reward and recognition scheme. These can be exchanged for a range of services and activities provided by our local and national Recognition Partners through our corporate charity partnerships. You can use your Time Credits to enjoy a coffee catch up with a friend, a day out with the kids to a local attraction or tickets to a heatre production you’ve always wanted to see.
Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community, meet new people, and develop new skills and with Tempo Time Credits you can gain recognition for your time and contributions too.
