Our Work In Cynon Valley

Our work in Cynon Valley – funded by Pen Y Cymoedd Wind Farm Community Fund
Tempo Time Credits in the Cynon Valley is all about bringing people together across Aberdare, Abercynon, Hirwaun, Penywaun, Cwmaman, Mountain Ash, Rhigos and nearby villages.
We team up with local residents, including young people, working-age adults and families, community groups, sports clubs, schools and businesses to make getting involved in community easy,co-producing the programme with the people who use it, so it’s shaped by local people based on what matters most locally.
Give time, earn a Time Credit and treat yourself to a well-deserved “thank you” locally as well as nationally while making your community an even better place to be.
In the Cynon Valley, we connect local volunteers (especially young people,working-age adults and families) with brilliant community groups, schools and partners and a growing number of local businesses and charities who want to give back to their community. This work matters because it helps remove barriers to volunteering, boosts well being and confidence and makes it easier for people to be part of local regeneration, while supporting community organisations to recruit and retain volunteers.
Here’s how it works (in real life): you volunteer with a local project, earn a Time Credit for time given and then spend your credits with local recognition partners.
The programme is co-designed, through network events and discussion, with local people so it fits what Cynon Valley communities actually want. This could be a group trip to use Time Credits, community spend like a barbeque and sports event or simply groups that recognise their volunteers with Time Credits offering a recognition at their own venue, ie a film night in the youth club ora craft workshop.
Key activities include local outreach, co-production and themed network events, embedding Time Credits in schools, youth groups and other organisations that utilise volunteer time, linking people to volunteering opportunities (like a litter pick on a housing estate), engaging parents in the school PTA, building a peer support/mentoring network, onboarding recognition partners and using Tempo’s digital platform to track earning/spending and learn what’s working.
“I love it. Time Credits give me a sense of dignity. They allow me to treat people, and that brings me real joy.”
‘Tempo Time Credits have allowed my brother the luxury of visiting the zoo and cinema without the steep cost of admission.’
‘The digital platform has revitalised volunteer engagement, making recognition both accessible and independent.’
What we've been up to!
In the first year, Lee and Gayle have been out and about across Cynon Valley building relationships, mapping local assets and getting Tempo woven into local networks.
Achievements include 181 volunteers signed up, 23 groups engaged, and 12 new recognition partners added, with 39 live offers now available across RCT, including more hyper-local opportunities like cafes and spaces on craft workshops. We’ve also been showing up at key events and forums (from schools and Children Looked After networks to job centres and community events), helping new partners see how Time Credits can work for them.
One volunteer, Roger, who was a reluctant sign-up at first summed up the “why” to get involved brilliantly: “Now I’m really happy I joined Tempo, it’s such an easy digital platform to use.”
He is actively booking his rewards and also gifting them to family!
An unexpected outcome of our project was working in partnership with Our Voice, Our Journey to offer a Taith funded opportunity for 4 young people (one from Cynon Valley) to experience a trip of a lifetime to New Zealand in 2026. This was preceded by a week-long residential to Jamie’s Farm with 10 young people (4from Cynon Valley) to look at volunteering, their communities and violence against women and girls.
Our learning so far is that people love earning credits but transport and the need for more local options can be a barrier to spending them, so we will be working hard to bring groups together to develop their own recognition, group trips and more local recognition to make using credits simple and fun.
